Searching for jobs online is becoming the new trend for the current generation of college students. Employers and turning to the internet to look for hires and students are going there to apply. Whereas the traditional job searching through newspapers requires the job seeker to call and fax/mail/e-mail a resume, online job search sites have made it much easier to directly submit a resume to employers. The best part of it for job seeker is that it’s free for you - the employers pay for the service (just like newspaper classifieds).
The three largest online job database sites are CareerBuilder, Monster and Yahoo! Hotjobs, in that order. It’s more likely that you’ve heard of Monster, but Careerbuilder actually has the largest database of job listings, including listings from multiple major newspapers. Monster has the second largest jobs database.
These sites are functionally similar in many ways:
- They allow you to fill out profiles and upload multiple resumes.
- They help match you up with potential employers.
- They provide you with helpful career advice articles, tips and suggestions.
- They have systems for you to quickly submit uploaded resumes to apply for jobs that interest you.
There is some overlap in the jobs that are listed on each, but also some opportunities that are listed on only one or two of the three. We suggest that you create a free account on Monster, CareerBuilder, and HotJobs and upload your resumes onto each. It is a little extra work, but can open more doors of opportunity for you, and is well worth it.
